The workshop will focus on Aḥwash songs from the Taznakht region, collected during their latest field trip. In the concert that follows, Izouran will share a series of improvisations and experimentations on Aḥwash developed during the residency, which centered on exploring questions of sustainability and synergy.

Izouran is a Moroccan experimental pop band based in Amazer (Souss) and Berlin (East Germany) featuring Hicham Ounamir on banjo/guitar/lotar, Borys Slowikowski on drums, Penelope Gkika on violin, Adam Goodwin on bass. On 22.11 they will share some of their new material alongside good old Teshlehit hits. Clapping, singing and dancing is most welcome!
Our friends from Doom Mood collective will provide savoury and sweet food (vegan, optionally gf) and drinks.

As part of the year-round program of the Days of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz (Tage der Jüdischen Kultur Chemnitz), we are honored to introduce Ahwash to the Chemnitz public for the first time. Ahwash is a collective song-and-dance tradition deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Amazigh people of Morocco, but it is also a practice historically shared by Moroccan Jews. This shared heritage makes Ahwash not only a powerful artistic expression but also a living testament to intercultural dialogue, coexistence, and community-building.

Ahwach workshop with Hicham Ounamir
Hicham grew up in the local variety of Ahwach – a diverse Amazigh tradition of song-dances. Performed outdoors, based on a call-and-response fashion and collective movement, this experience allows to delve into the essence of communal expression and the intrinsic connection between music, movement, and the environment.
The practice of music carries and generates knowledge. Qualities such as communality, sustainability in the sense of managing one’s energy resources, grounding, mindfullness, power circulation, the sense of being strongly interconnected while remaining independent, as well as balance – in every sense of that word – can be practiced, understood and embodied through music-dance. And Ahwash, having all that, seems to be particularly available to different kinds of bodies and cultural backgrounds.
During this year’s Ethno Port Festival Hicham will teach several song-dances from his local tradition to whomever feels like learning.
